Rakino Island
Gorgeous little island northeast of Auckland in the Hauraki Gulf. Holiday homes available, great walks, superb beaches and unrivalled views from every angle. 45 mins by ferry from Auckland.
Rakino Island prides itself on its isolation and unspoiled status - there are just 16 permanent residents here. This was where Sir George Grey began building his 19th-century home, before he discovered there was a better option to be had on Kawau Island!
Popular activities include fishing, walking, snorkelling and diving - the clear blue waters are perfect for beginners and experienced swimmers alike. There are no big shops or electricity on the island (there is solar power, though), so it's a real back-to-basics place - just great for adventurers and no-fuss families.
There are lodges and chalets to hire for your stay, but be aware of the single weekly ferry times to and from Auckland - and don't forget your shopping list! If you have your own boat, then you can come and go as you please, and because it's only 45 mins from Auckland, it's the perfect location for an unforgettable day trip. Waiheke Island is nearby, too, so why not put a winery tour on your list of things to do?
The kids will love the beautiful beaches, the safe waters, and the hills and paths to explore and climb. If you like serenity and a real sense of escape, Rakino Island has it in spades. Interestingly, it was also where the country's first solar-powered telephone sprang into life - still in use today.
How To Get There:
There are weekly crossings to Rakino Island from Pier 3 at Queen's Wharf provided by Belaire Ferries Ltd. Private charters are available from several companies along the quayside.
